Reflections of Sense of Place

by Hui Po'okela students

Sense of place helped me have a relationship with plants and humans by knowing how we are related. Lee A.

The sense of place project helped me understand my relationship with others and other things by learning how plants and the moon help us live on this world. I also connected better with my friends because they all helped me with the activities. I thought it was an awesome project for kids because we can elarn how we are all connected. Lihau C

This was a great way to learn more about yourself and the plants that are in this world or on the Hawaiian Islands. It's important to learn about your self and learn about your heritage.  Monica C

This project let me learn even more things about Hawaiian people and Kumu really helped us Hawaiian students. Kaleo H.

The Sense of Place project helped me understand my relationship with plants because without them nothing would be alive. Dylan A.

Wednesday was my favorite day of the week because that is when Kumu Makamae came to teach us! I loved the paintings and the collage because I express my feelings in them. We often don't get asked about our feelings in school. Reagan D.

I totally loved this project because we learned a lot of things and also learned about the culture and past of Maui. In SCIENCE class! Victory D

It was too bad that the other students didn't get to paint. The more kids you share this project with the better because more kids that know how they belong will let them know what to do to help the 'aina. Some of the kids that don't know how they belong and how to help this world will make bad choices.  Kamanu G.

I learned that art is your passion or love and you should draw what you think. Art is a picture or mind that creates itself. Art is life taking it's first breath. Jozette C

You can express your true self better in painting than in words. We all belong somewhere and somehow. (student period 2)

My painting is an original. There is only one painting like it and it was painted by me. (student period 2)

I put what I like. (student period 2)

I discovered my Self in painting me. (student period 2)
