Another teaching artist came to visit our class and work with the students. Her name was Kumu Kyra Duncan. She taught the students all about what art is, how it is made, and what makes for good art. If you know anything about art, you know that was one big lesson to do in a very short 75 minutes! One of the things she said, is that artists often use books and photographs to help them draw realistic pictures. Below Kumu Makamae helps a student find images of native Hawaiian flowers. Kumu Makame brought a canvas on which she had started a painting. Students were encouraged to come and paint on the canvas to create a collaborative painting. Here are two students concentrating and painting. |
Kumu Makame helps a student set up a stuffed pueo so that he can use it as a model to paint his work. While the students painted. Kumu Makamae played songs on her ukelele Students painted wonderful works of art that showed others how they belonged and how they were unique. Some students painted their moon phases and plants. Other students used colors, shapes, and lines to express themselves in their art. When we were reflecting on all the lessons we did, most all of the students said that painting their art piece was the favorite part of the entire unit! |
